The Patronal Feast:     on the Friday after the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost

About the Patron of the parish

Sacred Heart Feast

Solemnity honoring the Sacred Heart of Jesus that occurs on the Friday after the 2nd Sunday after Pentecost. The institution of the feast was approved by Clement XIII in 1765, extended to the Universal Church by Pius IX in 1856, and given new texts and the highest ranking by Pius XI in 1928. In the new liturgical books, the texts of the Divine Office and the Eucharist have been revised in accord with the Scriptural and liturgical emphases set forth by Pius XII in his 1956 encyclical on devotion to the Sacred Heart (Haurietis Aquas).

This feast, unlike most of the major liturgical Solemnities, does not celebrate a particular event in the History of Salvation. It commemorates this salvation itself. It celebrates the truth that God is love and He desires all generations to discover Him through Christ and respond to His love. We can elicit such a response more readily by contemplating the sufferings of Christ for us. The pierced Heart on the Cross is a symbol of this suffering. From it flowed “blood and water” the fountain of sacramental life in the Church”(Preface).

There is also a Votive Mass of the Sacred Heart, which is celebrated on the First Friday of each month when allowed by the rubrics.
