A bit of history

Graaff-Reinet enters into the History of the Catholic Church in South Africa in 1838. First Bishop and Vicar Apostolic of the Cape of Good Hope, the Rt. Rev Doctor Patrick Raymond Griffith , O.P. arrived at Graaff-Reinet on the 21st August at 5 p.m. First Mass at Graaff-Reinet was celebrated on Friday August 24th in the house of Mr. Abos. It was attended by eight Catholic and eight Protestants.

In July 1847 the Rev. John van Cauweleart have been sent to establish the Mission at Graaff-Reinet. Two school were opened one for boys and one for girls. Number of Catholics between 80 and 120. The mission of Graaff-Reinet remained under the Jesuit Fathers until 1889.

25th June 1894 the Convent was open with seven sisters.

About the Patron of the parish

Immaculate Conception

The prerogative whereby the Blessed Virgin Mary was sinless from the first moment of her existence. From the earliest times the Church formulated in her prayer the essentials of her faith concerning the Mother of Jesus. But it took a long time to uncover the wonders of grace contained in those words.

St. Irenaeus in the 3rd century foreshadowed Mary’s Immaculate Conception by calling her the New Eve. By the 8th century, there was a feast in honor of this title in the Eastern Church. In the 11th century, it appeared in the Western Church and was celebrated in England.

The feast was included in the calendar of the Universal Church in the 14th century and made a feast of obligation in 1708, with an Opening Prayer that declared: “God prepared a worthy dwelling place for (His) Son through the Immaculate Conception of the Virgin, preserving her from all sin in view of the foreseen Death of His Son”.

Finally, in 1854 Pius IX defined this prerogative as a dogma of Faith and used practically the very words of the Liturgy (found in the Opening Prayer).

The Immaculate Conception is more than just Mary’s preservation from evil. It is her fullness of grace. Like her privilege of the Assumption, it is based on Mary’s Divine Motherhood. And in both Mary is the anticipated image of the Church without spot or wrinkle (Eph 5:27).
