A bit of history

The Patronal Feast: March 19

About the Patron of the parish

Joseph, Husband of Mary

The legal father of Jesus is of royal descent from David. Reliable information can be found about him only in the Infancy Narratives. Apocryphal works added much to develop veneration of Joseph. His feast was not established until 1324. Pius IX proclaimed him Patron of the Universal Church in 1870. Leo XIII named him model for fathers of families in 1889. Pius XI called him the guardian of the spiritual battle against Communism and the Patron of Social Justice. To compete with the Communists’ May Day celebration, Pius XII instituted the Memorial of St. Joseph the Worker. John XXIII designated him Protector of the Second Vatican Council and inserted his name in Eucharistic Prayer I in 1962. Devotion to him is quite widespread among Catholics. St. Joseph is also the Patron of Carpenters, the Dying, and Workers. Liturgical celebration: March 19; the Worker – May 1st.
