Bishop De Palma, a priest for nearly 61 years who retired to Florida in 1988, died Thursday at Northside Hospital and Heart Institute.
"I wouldn't get up in the pulpit and criticize the system because the next day I would be back in the USA, and they would have to send another man," Bishop De Palma said in a 1998 interview at the Sacred Heart Residence in Pinellas Park, where he lived in retirement. "If necessary, I would stand up for my people."
Bishop De Palma was born in Walton, N.Y., and grew up in Rome, N.Y. He was ordained in 1944. In 1955, he was named provincial superior of what was then the North American Province.
