The Servant Of God, Benedict Daswa

History of the Life of Benedict Daswa.

Because of his principled and public stance against witchcraft and witchhunts, Benedict Daswa was brutally murdered on 2 February 1990. After dropping a man with a bag of mealie meal at his house, Benedict was on his way home when he found the road blocked by tree logs. He alighted from his vehicle to remove them. Then a rain of stones came from the bushes. Bleeding and injured, he ran across a soccerfield to a nearby dwelling, hoping to escape from his attackers. The mob chased him. Realising he could not escape he asked to kneel down and pray. One of the mob came up from behind, wielding a knobkerrie and struck Benedict a violent blow, crushing his skull. Mortally wounded Benedict fell to the ground. Boiling water was then poured over his head, ears, mouth and nostrils. The opponent of witchcraft was now dead!

The firstborn of Tshililo Petrus Daswa and Thidziambi Ida Daswa (Gundulo), Tshimangadzo Samuel Benedict Daswa (Bakali) was born on 16 April 1946 in Mbahe Village, 20 km from Thohoyandou. Tshimangadzo (wonder or amazement) was his traditional name, Samuel, the name he was given at birth, Benedict his baptismal name, Daswa his family name and Bakali his Lemba clan name. From the time of his baptism he was commonly known as Benedict.

Just as GOD said to Samuel, “Listen carefully. I'm getting ready to do something in Israel that is going to shake everyone up and get their attention" (1 Samuel 3:11), Daswa shook his community. He stood against the widespread cultural practice of witchcraft which cost him his life. As the Church has pronounced him a martyr for the faith, he is now one with the “great cloud of witnesses surrounding us" (Hebrews 12:1)

Benedic’s martyrdom did not come out of the blue. He had led a holy lite. He was a diligent worker, a good family man, a deeply committed educator, an active layman in the parish, an avid sportsman, a leader, in the community, a man of charity, especially to the poor, and above all, a man of deep prayer and spirituality. In short,  Benedict lived a good life and died a holy death in the cause of life.
