 2nd Sunday of Advent – 2018

“the word of God came to John (…) in the desert”

God spoke at the beginning of time and everything came into existence, and till today He is speaking to us all the time. Is His word reaching our ears?

The Gospel says that “the word of God came to John” when he was “in the desert”. Why? What is so special about the desert?

That the word – of anyone, God included – may come to us we need to be ready to listen to the one who speaks to us. A desert is a lonely place. There almost is nothing to concentrate on, to disturb us. So then, it is – in a way – a perfect place and space to concentrate on listening. We may listen to the wind – if there is any – we may listen to ourselves, to our own thoughts. Then what? Shall we get out into the desert in order to listen to God’s word? No, there is no need for that. But there is a need to find within ourselves such a space where nothing will take us away from listening to ourselves and God’s word.

God is the most wonderful teacher and because He loves us so much, He is talking to us all the time. He knows our weaknesses and He knows our struggle to make this life a bit better. If we make ourselves available to Him, to His word, we will hear His voice in our hearts. He will tell us what and how to say and do so that everything will be alright.

Let us get ready, let us be willing to listen to Him. He wants to give us not only the place in His heavenly kingdom, but to make this present life much better than it is now. John the Baptist run away from the people but later he came back to share with them what he has heard from God.

Let the Word of God be in our hearts.
