 1st Sunday of Lent – 2018

“The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the Gospel”

A deadline. I think many of us have had this kind of experience. Something had to be finished at that specific time. This is a little magic moment when we get some additional push to do what we need to do.

There is another experience with certain conditions that need to be fulfilled so that we may get what we want to or where we want to get to. We know that quite well, i.e. to go to Cape Town by a bus. First we need to get the ticket, so there must be a space on the bus, we need to pay for it and so on.

Jesus – in today’s Gospel – gives us a hint, a really good hint how we can get to God’s kingdom. It is the final time: “The kingdom of God is at hand”. It is so close, nearby that we may touch it – “at hand”. Like a book that we want to read, or like a cup of coffee that we want to drink. It is at the stretching of our hand.

And there are some conditions that we need to fulfill. Actually only two: “Repent and believe”. “Repent” – means to be contrite for past conduct, or to regret our past actions, words and attitudes. To truly repent we need to see and recognize that something in our doings wasn’t all right. We need to have a knowledge of that. Then, to “believe” – a second condition – to believe not into something, or in something as yes, some not. We need to believe – to accept wholeheartedly – the Gospel = all of Jesus’ teaching.

Are we ready to welcome and be welcome into God’s kingdom? It is already the right time.
